Pakistan to send Islamabad Police officers to Beijing for AI, modern policing training

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's interior ministry announced on Wednesday that the government would send Islamabad Police officers to Beijing so that they can receive training in artificial intelligence and modern policing methods. Pakistan has recently undertaken measures to enhance its policing methods, especially as it faces surging militant attacks in its northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and southwestern Balochistan provinces. These efforts include digitizing police records, hiring more women police officers and releasing public awareness videos on social media platforms. Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Beijing Police Department's Deputy Director General Gao Jianxin in Islamabad. The two sides discussed collaboration between the police forces of Islamabad and Beijing, the interior ministry said. 'During the meeting, it was decided that officers of Islamabad police will be sent to Beijing for training in modern policing and advanced technologies,' the ministry said in a statement. 'These officers will participate in various training courses conducted by the Beijing Police Department. They will also receive special training in the use of artificial intelligence to further improve the policing system,' it added. The minister said Pakistan would benefit from the 'highly efficient and technologically advanced' Beijing police force, adding that the use of modern technology was essential for public safety and crime prevention. Naqvi also highlighted the importance of timely information sharing to tackle militancy, crime, drug trafficking and human smuggling, the ministry said. He accepted the Beijing Police's offer to provide anti-riot training to the Islamabad police, the statement said.

Pakistan seeks closer security ties with Bahrain to curb drugs, human smuggling

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday called for deeper cooperation with Bahrain to combat narcotics trafficking and human smuggling, as both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral security ties during his official visit to the Gulf state. Pakistan and Bahrain share a longstanding relationship encompassing diplomacy, security, economic exchange and people-to-people links. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1971, the two nations have developed close political and military cooperation, including defense training, joint security initiatives and regular high-level engagements. In recent years, with rising concerns over drug trafficking and human smuggling, both countries have intensified efforts to coordinate through formal channels to facilitate intelligence sharing and law enforcement collaboration. 'Enhanced cooperation between the interior ministries of Pakistan and Bahrain to counter narcotics and human smuggling is the need of the hour,' Naqvi said, according to an official statement issued after his meeting with his Bahraini counterpart, General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa. The ministers discussed issues of mutual interest and emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in counterterrorism. The discussion also emphasized the need to enhance the effectiveness of the Pakistan–Bahrain Joint Security Committee, a formal mechanism for coordinating on counterterrorism and related issues, while exploring ways to jointly address broader regional and global security challenges. Bahrain's interior minister welcomed the visit as an opportunity to deepen existing ties, describing the security cooperation and coordination between the two countries as 'valued and constructive.' He also expressed appreciation for Pakistan's continued engagement across a range of sectors, with particular emphasis on security.

No discussion to oust Zardari, promote Pakistan military chief to presidency

KARACHI: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday dismissed rumors that President Asif Ali Zardari is being pushed out of office or that army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is eyeing the presidency, reiterating that there had been no discussion about such a change. Media chatter about a possible constitutional amendment to replace President Zardari with someone else, potentially even the army chief, has gained traction in recent days. However, key political figures have swiftly rejected the notion. 'We are fully aware of who is behind the malicious campaign targeting President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and the Chief of Army Staff,' Naqvi said in a post on X. 'I have categorically stated that there has been no discussion, nor does any such idea exist, about the President being asked to resign or the COAS aspiring to assume the presidency.' The president maintains a 'strong and respectful' relationship with the military leadership, Naqvi said, adding that the army chief's 'sole focus' was on Pakistan's strength and stability. He warned those pushing this narrative in coordination with 'hostile foreign agencies' to continue as they wished but vowed that the government would do 'whatever is necessary to make Pakistan strong again, InshAllah.' On Tuesday, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) echoed Naqvi's rebuke, with PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari calling the rumors 'baseless' and noting that the country's federal government could not function without the PPP's support. 'Zardari is the duly elected president of this country, and this system cannot function without him,' Bukhari said, dismissing the allegations as 'uninformed and misleading.' Irfan Siddiqui, a close aide to Prime Minister Sharif and a former senator, has also rejected the speculation, saying, 'No such suggestion is under consideration at any level.'
